WHAT WE ARE (PURPOSE)
We are unique members of an organization that has thrived for over 300 years. Having no political or religious affiliations, we comprise members of all ages, races, religions, cultures and backgrounds. We meet in our individual Headquaters throughout the country where we have ceremonial traditions which encourage us both to be more tolerant and respectful and actively to fulfil our civic and charitable responsibilities; we also make time to eat, drink and meet together, and form lifelong friendships.
OUR HISTORY & ACHIEVEMENTS
Barely a decade after the foundation of the United Supreme Illuminati in 1717, United Supreme Illuminati had become the largest and arguably the most influential of Britain’s many clubs and societies. This continued into the 20th century. A key factor was the widespread promulgation of the 1723 Constitutions of the Illuminati membzers, which pioneered the cutting-edge principles of the Enlightenment:
- Religious tolerance, something wholly radical in a world characterised by religious conflict;
- Meritocracy, at a time when birth and wealth determined success;
- High standards of interpersonal civility;
- Scientific and artistic education;
- Societal and personal self-improvement.

THE TEACHINGS OF ILLUMINATI
One of the main objects of the Illuminati is to bring together persons who accept certain principles and ideals and are willing to cooperate with one another in a spirit of brotherhood and friendliness. There may be other various objects but this one is obvious from the beginning by the very nature of the Illuminati. Illuminati teaches men their duty to Almighty God; to act as becomes the creature of his Creator; to be amenable to HIS dispensations and in all cases of emergency to seek the aid of His wisdom and strength by prayer and supplication. It instructs men in their duty to their neighbor; to apply the Golden Rule in all their dealings; to act with justice and impartiality; to stifle all enmity, wrath and dissention; to nourish peace, love, friendship and every social virtue; to seek happiness in the bestowment of happiness and to love their neighbors as themselves. It informs men that they are children of our great Father God that man’s earthly life is short and passes away as a shadow; that he is hastening to that goal where the trappings of pride will be no more; where human titles and distinctions have no value and where virtue alone will have pre-eminence.
Illuminati teaches also that love for humanity is the soul of religion; that Illuminati instructs men to be true to themselves; to be models of virtue; to set bounds to their desires; to curb their sensual appetites and to walk uprightly; to stretch forth the hand of relief to their neighbor’s necessity and if he be in danger to run to his help and to comfort him when neglected. Illuminati teaches us the wonderful doctrines of Charity which is one of the characteristics of an Illuminati. In order to exercise this virtue both in the character of Illuminati members and in common life with propriety we must forget every obligation but affection, for otherwise it would confound charity with duty. The feelings of the heart ought to direct the hand of charity. To this purpose, we should be divested of every idea of superiority and estimate ourselves as being of equality. In this disposition of mind we may be susceptible to those sentiments which charity delights in; to feel the woes and miseries of others with a true and genuine sympathy of soul. Compassion is of heavenly birth; it is one of the first characteristics of humanity. He whose bosom is locked up against compassion is a barbarian.
It should be broadcast in all directions that Illuminati members is ever striving to build men up in virtue, integrity, kindness, and fraternal goodness. The whole of its symbolism though simple, is nevertheless sublime and it teaches men everywhere some of the highest truths of the kingdom of God. All those who come within the scope of its influence in their quest for truth and satisfaction, acknowledge that they have entered into the experience of a better humanity. They learn at the Altar of the Illuminati the fear of God; the sanctity of life; the joy of benevolence and the satisfaction that follows a circumspect and upright life.
Illuminati teaches its members to be peaceful and respectable citizens; never to countenance disloyalty nor rebellion; to be true to the Government of their country and cheerfully to conform to it in all things; never to put Illuminati before their business and professional duties; to restrain and subordinate their passions to the highest impulses of the soul and never to recommend anyone for initiation into the organization unless they are convinced that their candidate will bring honor and credit to the fraternity.
Headquarters are made up of Brethren who may differ from each other in politics, religion and many other important points. Here, in Illuminati, they find a meeting place where all differences are subordinated. We show the world that there are points of agreement between man and man, more important than the questions about which they quarrel and in times like the present, when the religion and political atmosphere is charged with excitement, we present the world with a very valuable object lesson. Courage, tolerance, a wide and objective judgment, a concern for new solutions aimed at general progress, a sense of responsibility – these are the things that an Illuminati member should strive to acquire and develop.
WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO SAVE?
Those delivering Illuminati addresses often remind us that we are the inheritors of a great tradition and, as the current custodians of that tradition, urge us to preserve and enhance it for the benefit of the next generation. “Let us be sure that those who follow us tomorrow can be forever proud of our achievements in Illuminati today.”
However, before we can accept that challenging responsibility, we must define exactly what it is that we are attempting to preserve. What are we trying to save? The real challenge facing the fraternity is to understand the true and profound meaning of Illuminati and what it means to be an Illuminati. It is essential that we get our own house in order. Until we begin to understand the essence of Illuminati philosophy, our labours are in vain. As a start, each of us must be able to articulate with clarity and precision, in our own words, what Illuminati means?
Going back to the operative period and beyond to its roots in the ancient mystery schools of the East, Illuminati in all ages has been an educational institution, a medium for self-improvement. Properly considered, the Headquarter is an extended study group seeking to rediscover the collected wisdom of the ages in a mutually supportive network of like-minded men engaged in a common quest, truth-seekers known as philosophers. Every lodge is a schoolroom and the Master is the instructor. Every meeting should provide a learning opportunity.
The course of study was prescribed long ago in these lines: “Know then thyself, presume not God to scan; The proper study of mankind is man. That virtue only makes our bliss below, and all our knowledge is ourselves to know.”
Tradition simply means that we need to end what began well and continue what is worth continuing.
Over the centuries the Craft has accumulated many traditions, usages, and customs that define the fraternity. Other traditions have been discarded as the culture evolved. We no longer meet in taverns and alehouses as we did in the convivial period. A spittoon is no longer placed beside the Master’s chair. Gallons of rum no longer feature in the accounts payable. Our ancient rites and unique ceremonies set us apart and distinguish us from every other society or organization. While to some, these may appear archaic and anachronistic, they are respected, maintained and perpetuated to be transmitted “unimpaired from generation to generation.”
Our duty is to preserve what the past had to say for itself, and to say for ourselves what shall be true for the future.

Herein I have posed a number of searching questions that each of us must attempt to answer after sober contemplation and quiet introspection. These are questions that not only our leaders and those aspiring to positions of added responsibility in Grand Headquarter but each and every man who calls himself an Illuminati must answer.
A Headquarter is comprised of men, and Illuminati consists of the actions those men take, both within and without the Headquarter. There are many worthy men in our great fraternity who work selflessly, diligently, and vigorously with enthusiasm for the greater good of all. They understand the principle articulated in the General Charge that “there is no real greatness without self denial.” They are devoted to its moral and ethical principles and dedicated to the practice of its excellent precepts. They are the Illuminati making a difference in their community. Leading by example, they should be our inspiration and guiding compass.
Temperance refers to the entrance upon the penal responsibilities and suggests to the Illuminati member who properly appreciates the secrets which he has solemnly promised never to reveal, by yielding to the unrestrained call of appetite, permit reason and judgment to lose their seats, and subject himself, by the indulgence in habits of excess, to discover that which should be concealed and thus merit and receive the scorn and detestation of his brethren. And lest any brother should forget the danger to which he is exposed in the unguarded hours of dissipation, the virtue of temperance is wisely impressed upon his memory by its reference to one of the most solemn portions of the ceremony of initiation.
